Located at the intersection of Route 25 and Mile Hill Road, Newtown
Since World War I the Blue Star banner has been used to designate the home or family of someone serving in the Armed Forces. This banner was the inspiration for the Blue Star Highway project.
Established in 1945 by the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now NGC, Inc.) the Blue Star Highway system covers thousands of miles across the Continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. Blue Star Highway Markers designate these routes.
As noted on the Federated Garden Clubs of CT site:
Connecticut is proud to have 15 Blue Star Memorials. Each is sponsored by a garden club that is a member of The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc. (FGCCT) or by the FGCCT itself. Blue Star memorials may be found in these Connecticut towns: Beacon Falls, Bethel, Bridgeport, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Danbury, Durham, East Haddam, East Lyme, Middletown, Milford, Naugatuck, Newtown, North Haven, Roxbury, Stamford, and Westbrook.
The Garden Club of Newtown maintains a commemorative garden to celebrate the past, present and future members of our Armed Forces. The Club honors national veteran holidays by placing memorial wreaths at our Blue Star Memorial site.
The garden at the Blue Star Memorial was updated in May 2022 with new plantings of Blue Star Ansonia, Mountain mint, a Red Twig dogwood, bee balm, coreopsis, and Little Blue Stem grasses to add winter interest. The garden planting will benefit pollinators and other wildlife.
